I too have the same feelings as you. I lived in Canarsie from the moment I was born (1971) till around 1993 or so (moved to Staten Island, like so many Broooklynites do). I returned recently to show my future (now) husband my childhood home on the corner of Avenue M and 96th Street. From the moment we pulled up I was devastated. What used to be my backyard was now complete with a makeshift basketball hoop, with a milk crate, instead of an actually net. The beautiful flowers and trees we had planted, several were rooted christmas trees which we planted after Christmas, were now over grown and unattended to. However, I contribute this to our country's priorities. Keeping certain people down. Give the unfortunate welfare so that they do not educate themselves or have high aspirations. Why spend your time working for a living when you are fed and clothed without having to move from your couch while you watch Jerry Springer. I really believe this is a plan of the government, continue to give them "free" cash and we don't have to deal with them in the business world. This is an advantage to the government to keep the "rich whiteman in office" For example, if you were born into a low class, poor family, living in Bedford Sty, Brooklyn, would you aspire to be president? How many minorities aspire to be anything worth while? Very few considering the majority of other races wanting to be doctors, lawyers, cops, firemen, etc. We literally are animals, savages, and just like any animal we are taught from birth how to survive. It is up to the parent to teach children not to be savages. Some people are not given that choice. When my husbands family came to this country they were given nothing, you had to fend for yourself to survive. The Irish survived, the Italians survived, currently the Koreans survive, the Chinese survive and others survive. And parents knew that, you were on your own and had to make alife for yourself. In some cases, people are "taught" to mate and bare children, just as animals do. These people are now parents, who grew up on Nintendo and playstation, and therefore are incapable of being creative, since having "games" made up for them. When I was a child and you stole something you got your ass whipped, now there is a such thing as "creative parenting" for people who have no creativity because the government paid for the distractions. When I was a child, I had dirt, a shovel and the garden hose to make mud pies with and I spanked my baby dolls when I thought they were bad. Now that is corporal punishment. All of this saddends me and when I have children I hope that I, an educated and well raised person, can make a conscience decsion to raise my children the way I was raised as opposed to the way that seems to be right at the moment. As a 31 year old, I feel apallled that I have to say out loud on many occasion "these kids are going to be running the country when I am in my 60's and I am scared". This country needed balls and I think 9/11 did that. Most were too hooked on liberalism. This is a time for change.
