Member activity is automatically tracked via login and those who are seriously inactive are periodically removed from the roster...so the numbers go up as more people join and go down some when inactives are removed.
Though, I think the reason people are going inactive are due to the Austria Aliens eating them...once they have taken and eaten their socks there is nothing else left to do other then that. But, hey, no one seems to believe me....oh well....
