Subject: Examination of children and teens through the navel
In reply to: Knut Holt 's message, "General trends in childhood examinations" on 21:22:18 01/13/14 Mon

Steadily more often children are examined in their stomach with an instrument put in through the navel. The instrument is usually shaped like a flexible tube, much like a colonoscope or cystoscope, and these instruments may even be used for this purpose.. It contains an optical camera and channels for air or liquid to inflate the stomach cavity and to flush. It also contains channels used to take specimens.

Usually the child is put to sleep before this examination, and the examination is usually performed together with other types of examinations. Often the examination is performed when the child has been put to sleep for some other purpose, like tonsil surgery or dental work. Usually the child, and sometimes not either the parents, do not knows that it has been performed, but the child will typically work up with the navel taped and with pain in that region.

I have the impression that this examination is often performed on children that is often sick, but where one does not know about any specific problem at a specific organ, or as a part of secret scientific projects where children are used.
