Subject: Globe Books section

Hi, everybody:

I'm taking the liberty of passing on this e-mail from Jim Bartley, one of
the Books Section editors at the Globe and Mail. For anyone who noticed the
absence of the Globe Books section this week, apparently they are
considering scrapping it altogether, as Mr. Bartley explains. So unless we
want to see book reviews completely dry up and blow away in this country, we
have to let them know what we feel about it. Please join me in taking a
moment to e-mail the editors at the addresses below.

Thanks,

Lori

Re: Globe and Mail Books "taking a break."

Dear book lovers,

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been doing a slow burn since I
was deprived of my ritual scattering of toast crumbs onto the Globe and Mail
Books section this morning. Three online reviews (and a paean to Isaac
Newton) is not an acceptable Saturday book effort. Next weekend we'll get
the same skimpy web offering --- which I personally consider an insult to
the diligent toilers of CanLit and to all dedicated readers.

I have heard this is officially a "cost cutting" measure. Can this be more
ominous? A Globe source tells me that the senior editors (this does not
include Martin Levin of Books) are testing the waters. They want to know if
we care about Globe Books in its paper format and, apparently, if we
consider a few online reviews per week to be a respectable alternative.

Please join me in proving that we care. Below is a Globe contact list of
senior editors from the masthead, beginning with the Editor-in-Chief. I'd
suggest a single "Dear Globe Editors" email to the bunch, with a cc to
<letters@globeandmail.com>.

Please do not copy or forward my words to Globe editors, but send a message
in your own words. Just a sentence or two will be enough.

Edward Greenspon <egreenspon@globeandmail.com>,
Sylvia Stead <sstead@globeandmail.com>,
Neil A. Campbell <nacampbell@globeandmail.com>,
Colin Mackenzie <cmackenzie@globeandmail.com>,
John Stackhouse <jstackhouse@globeandmail.com>,
Cathrin Bradbury <cbradbury@globeandmail.com>,
Adrian Norris <anorris@globeandmail.com>,
Angus Frame <aframe@globeandmail.com>

Thanks so much for your interest!

Best regards,

Jim
