Subject: Writing seminars

The last time I went to the local CAA meeting, they were having a writing seminar on how to write a page turner, put on by Brian Henry, a man with a nice resume of writing and editing, who makes quite a lot of money doing writing courses in Southern Ontario. So, we got a few bucks worth of writing seminar for free, but if this is what we get, I don't think it's worth the money.

Every damned seminar I go to seems about the same. You get some advice, followed by a period of writing practice, some people get to read their bit, and the facilitator comments positively on the work that is read, and everybody goes out about as good a writer as they came in.

My writing has improved over the last twenty years, but it took years to improve, gathering little insights one at a time from the good writers and editors who came to CAA meetings, and listening to the comments on my and others' writing. I don't think the all-day Saturday courses can be worth the nickel. Expecially when it's a fairly big nickel.
