I bought a package of manila envelopes where the glue only seems to work about halfway down the flap, so I've taping them. Guess I better recycle the rest of them, since I'm running the risk of rejection using them.

That article was funny, but you know, I really get the feeling he was only half-kidding. I suppose sitting on the other side of the desk would give me a different point of view, but sometimes I get tired of listening to these editorial types complain about the number of submissions they get. It only stands to reason that most submissions are going to be unsuitable, so why not just stick a slip in their SASEs and get on with it? I have read serious accounts of editorial staff pulling bad mss. from the slush pile and reading bits aloud for each other's amusement. How very funny. And we wonder why it takes months and years for these people to send us a rejection, if they ever even bother. Makes you wonder why they even get into the business in the first place. Some of them I'm downright suspicious of, like a certain editor at a certain journal who admitted she doesn't write. I mean, editing a literary journal is not a well-paying or prestigious career, so you wonder what the motivation could be for doing it when you're not even a writer yourself.

My theory is that it's a power thing, and they want to drive us all crazy.

Cheers,

Lori
