I have often thought that a degree in Fine fArts, or even a B.A. in English lit. wouldn't be a big help in becoming a writer. I have always thought that writers should get degrees in Engineering or Food Service Management, live amongst real people, and write about them.

Otherwise you end up being Joyce Carol Oates, writing boring stories about academics, living lives that only connect with other academics. Or boring stories about academic people in not-quite-real non-academic situations, usually highly symbolic of something-or-other.

Read David Adams Richards - there's a writer who has lived amongst the real people he writes about.
