Subject: The Last Variety Show

What a wonderful set of Five final shows, Dana and Hal did today, but how sad that it was the last Variety shows performed ever!

I saw the last three shows today and had the honor of photographing all three shows for this History of the Golden Horseshoe website.

Following the 3pm show, Disney Entertainment managers bid a private farewell to Dana and Hal backstage and presented him with a cake.

During the 4:15 show, the New Orleans Square a capella group, Side Effect briefly entertained Dana with "Rockin" Robin" and sang a spirited good-bye to the show.

At the last 5:30 show, we were treated to many guests in the audience including one of Dana's first sound men, Bobby Davis, Dana's wife, Jane, and two children, his first piano player for three years, Richard Allen, many of his co-workers and fellow magicians from all over California, dozens of his most ardent fans [including myself] and last, but certainly not least, Mr. Wally Boag, the creator and star of the first Golden Horseshoe Revue and Dana's mentor.

Wally stood up and spoke for about 10 minutes and treated us to his voice impressions of Jose, the Tiki Room Parrot that he voiced. He shared the story of his Disneyland connection to Dana and noted comedian, Steve Martin and thanked Dana for his dedication to the Variety Show after 4000+ performances.

Dana ended the show with Luigi's famous Can-Can Dance and left the stage to a thunderous standing ovations and an encore. Bless you Dana Daniels for making us laugh for 8+ years in the Golden Horseshoe, as well as the mant years that you performed in Frontierland and Fantasyland. You and Hal will be greatly missed!

We attended all 5 shows on Wednesday, and anticipated as well as dreaded the final show. You hate to see good things come to an end, people moved, and tradition lost, but I have found that cream rises to the top and the Variety Show was pure cream. I now await some top Disney person, to wake up and bring it all back! In the mean-time, a little of my heart is now void of the one thing I could count on, laughter and Disney magic. Thanks Dana and Hal for keeping us young!
