The simple answer is this: commitment to the character. There are few cast members in the shows history that can sell any role they play because they are in the moment. Ferrell was one, Aykroyd was another, as was Hartman. I truly believe that Wiig is approaching that level of excellence. Its another reason why she is far from the annoyance level that Molly Shannon, Jimmy Fallon and to a lesser extent Amy Poehler had towards the end of their respective SNL runs. Their characters all had a look at me hammy vibe that came across as hacky. Not every sketch she does is a hit but she is the most talented member of the cast in part because of her ability to sell. In terms of her characters being "hyperverbal", you could make the same arguement with Ferrell that later on his career he became reliant on the "Will Ferrell Yelling" sketch. Does that diminish his talent level and his contribution to the show at that time?
