Subject: Latest "Medical Emergency"

So last night Allyson and I had a medical emergency that required 2.5 hours in the "ER".

What could have gone so wrong you ask? Well, Allyson accidently stepped on Bailey's (our younger cat) paw.

For those that don't know, we keep the cats in their den (aka our basement) at night and when we aren't home so as to preserve the rest of our house. Well, Allyson was getting them into the basement last night when Bailey somehow wound up underfoot!

After I picked him up it was pretty clear we were in for a trip to the emergency vet. It was bleeding pretty bad, there was a good chunk of skin missing, and it looked broken/dislocated (I was betting dislocated from the way it looked). He wasn't wailing in pain or anything, but he definitely needed medical attention.

So we call the vet, and into the car we go. Now, Mr. Bailey has never enjoyed car rides. He sits in his crate and cries and cries. There was no time for a crate, so I had him in a towel. Well, he cried and cried the whole way to the vet.

Once we got there, the assistant took a look at him and said, "we'll get the Dr. to take a look, but she's going to want to do an xray, looks dislocated." Fairly pleased with my amateur diagnosis, we waited a few minutes for the Dr. She arrived, looked at it, and said, "We need to take an xray. It could be broken, but I'm guessing dislocated." She was also kind enough to inform us just what THAT was going to cost us, not that it really mattered at this point. Side note: Bailey is the happiest cat of all time. He purred, yup, PURRED through his exam.

So, we waited again while she undertook her task. She gave him something "like morphine" to relax him more (though given that he was purring, I don't know that he really needed it). In the little side line, I was pretty happy with my untrained ability to come to thet same conclusion as the vet about what was wrong.

Well, come to find out, we were all wrong. She was astonished, but it turned out to just be the worst bruise she'd ever seen without a break/dislocation. She gave us an antibiotic and sent us on our way with the same instructions I've gotten for every cut/bruise: keep the wound clean and try to put cold compress on it.

Remember what I said about him not enjoying car rides? Remember what I said about the "morphine like" drug he got? Problem solved -- he just sat on my lap and watched the world go by out the window the entire ride home.

So that was our little adventure!
