Hello friends. It perturbs me to see even educated people being so naived to be taken in by the lure of free gifts and lucky draws and to be hoodwinked by business enterprises which purports to give u wonderful holidays with lesser-than-what is charged price by the local travel agents. Don't believe them. Please educate the masses - your friends, your relatives and all your acquaintances. What is involved here is simply this; u pay an upfront cost - club membership and enjoy future holidays at a so-called premium. Don't forget there is also an annual subscription cost which is called maintenance fee or subscription fee which can spiral up beyond your control. There is no resale value to your membership. And they make u sign every single column on the contract letter to absolve the business entity of any blame but u the hapless victim take the blame for acknowledging everything that has been touted by them - u understand the contract; u understand the benefits; u understand that the agreement is binding; u understand about the annual subscription or maintenance fees; u understand that it is not rescindable; u understand that the holdiday cost is so much and so on and so on. But do you realise that what has been promised when u attended the presentation and what has been shown to you in the presentation is not what u actually get? For example, are u aware that the holidays are not guaranteed?; your bookings are not guaranteed?; the discounts u get are not significant to offset the cost of what u are paying for?
There is a psychological factor at work in this business; u are lured by your greed and impulsiveness. The holiday consultants who are trained liars know how to pep your ego and entice u to make decisions in their favours. The whole machinery in the marketing company - from the telemarketing staff, the street surveyors, the receptionists, the holiday consultants, the contracts officers are all geared towards getting maximum benefit at your expense. Never mind the lie - as long as u believe what they say and at the end of it sign the dotted line and accept the contract and hopefully u miss the 3-day cooling period (given under the CPFTA, 2004) they are happy. There is no way after this u can rescind the contract even if u later feel u have been cheated - the law of contract takes over and u have no say.
So my friends, the way i see how we can get back at these people is by public education. The authorities seem to have their hands tied on this issue. We have to help ourselves. So the only way i see is to pass the message (like the gospel truth) by way of mouth or by any means possible to get as many people as possible to know about the underhand methods adopted by these marketing companies - many of them foreign-owned so that less and less people fall into their trap. Use the internet, email, telephone or coffee shop talk to pass this message : Never fall for free gifts and offers; nothing is free; if u have to attend a talk on timeshare or holiday club be very careful; don't sign up for anything without asking for extra time to review the contract documents with learned friends or lawyers. I still feel that the best way to holiday is through your local trusted holiday travel agent. No headaches after u come back from your holiday.........
