The only thing I can think of is that the princess said that she went upstairs after dinner to put her ring up...she put it in the jewelry box, took a bath and then went downstairs for dinner. She ate dinner twice evidently...so there's a mix up in her story..so the detective must have picked up on that and realized that her story wasn't straight, so she must have taken her own ring.
