I went to see it last night. Here’s the review I sent to my Horror in Film and Literature list:

You know, I saw this last night in the early evening, and I'm still stunned at how good this is. STUNNED. Y'all know how picky I am about movies, but I will say that this is one of the best films I've ever seen.

Now you're all stunned, too, huh? ;-)

The theater full of aging children (average age, between fourty and fifty) seemed to be stunned as well. At the end of the movie we filed out silently. Like the young children who had been psychotically entranced with Harry Potter, we elder children were likewise completely spellbound for our Fellowship of the Ring. (I've read that word, "spellbound"
before, but this is the first time I've ever actually experienced it.)

New Zealand is absolutely perfect as the location for this film. Every outside shot is a thing of beauty. Every interior location is a wonder as well. The special effects defy description.

Casting was spectacular - Legolas was...man, he IS Legolas. The actor I was completely surprised with is Liv Tyler as Arwen. When I saw her in Armegeddon I actually laughed out loud I thought she was so awful. Underbite and all, I thought she was fine as a courageous elf. The worst
bit of casting was Hugo Weaving as Elrond - ironically because he was so amazing in his last movie.

There are of course cinematic shortcuts and some "pumping up the action". The movie is shot so closely to the novel for the most part that when these "Hollywood moments" occur, it served to really drag me out of the movie. Get this, though. The film is so good that I really and truly
didn't mind the distractions, and quickly got over them. Half a day later, I still don't mind.
As I mentioned in a couple of newsgroups earlier today, the absolute worst part of the movie is the CRUELTY the makers have shown in making us wait a whole YEAR for the next film. I'm serious. I think all us moviegoers were all about to cry as the fellowship neared the end of the first part,
because we knew we'd have to wait a whole year for the next part.

p.s. How do I justify putting a review of LotR on the Horror List? *laugh* By how terrified the woman sitting next to me was during several parts of the film.
