Subject: Task 14

After reading Nunan's article, I was able to realize that I had never been an autonomos student. Such a thing has never happened to me in neither places I find myself as a learner: when I used to take English classes at a language institute, I was never worried about either exams or whatever the teacher was saying. For that matter, I was always a passive learner who did not care about the ways my learning could evolve. It just came to my mind that such a behavior might have happened due to my age: I had the pre-concept towards English: it was a pretty easy language to be learnt (concept which has been extinguish quite a long time ago)and I had to worry about my other school subjects. Interestingly, such a feeling only took place whenever I had to be graded, therefore, I just wanted to pass and it was convenient to be spoon-fed by my teachers.
Moreover, the same passivity in relation to my learning happens to me at college. I do not mind only to have a lecturer who keeps talking the whole hour and evaluate students later, I rather prefer that way. On the other hand, I guess I have acquired some autonomy at university since students have been able to decide whether taking a course or not. According to Nunan (2000), autonomy takes place whenever one has the possibility to choose the kind of activities and resources to have in order to develop his/her ability to learn. Likewise, this is what has been happening at FALE now: undergraduates, like me, have got the opportunity to take whatever disciplines they want. Such a choice is made in relation to one's likes.
I believe that teacher should help students be aware of how good to be autonomos is. As a teacher, I have always tried to teach a content using different approaches. After some time I could see that some activities that are good for some students do not work for others. Teachers have to go through much adaptation in their classes in order to teach effectivily. Also, they have to guide students to make them study outside their classroom's environment using the devices that most please them. Regarding myself, I haven't changed much since my first days at school. I'm still a quite passive student and such an attitude has been strongly enhanced after I started working and went through the lack of time to do many things at the same time. But having the chance to select what I want to do concerning to my college studying has eased the difficult duty of learning.
