Author: Ana Carolina de Carvalho
Subject: TASK 15

I browsed around many of the links that were our Course Page and decided to write about a few. I tried the three encyclopedias (http://www.britannica.com/, http://www.webopedia.com/,
http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/home.aspx) and I liked WEBOPEDIA the most. I entered the same search item: Maya Angelou (who happens to be one of the authors that I work with in my monograph research and will work with in my Master's thesis next semester). BRITANNICA has good content too. ENCARTA simply did not produce any result whereas the other two not only did they provide many biographical information and background on her work, they also had many links to articles on the author and on her works. The problem with all of them is that, to have access to most of the information, you have to be registered, something like a membership. It is free but if you are looking for something quick you might have to look somewhere else. Plus, encarta is much better on CD-rom where you can visualize the categories more easily.

For images, I chose to go to http://www.clipart.com/ and was very lucky. Again, I chose a topic of search - Boston - and the result was great. It came out with many, really, many pictures of Boston, with its great architecture and sights. You can also pick when entering your search topic if you want photos, clipart, animation, etc... related to that topic. Cool.

For fun, I chose FUN BRAIN at http://www.funbrain.com. It is a neat page for kids to play, have fun and learn. It is divided into sections for parents, kids and teachers. It is also split into grades according to the child's age and school level. Besides all the games, it has challenging quizes and help with homework. Very cute!
I also went to FEEL GOOD at http://feelgoodpages.com/lovestorygame/ but did not like it. Although the layout is nice and colorful, and no doubt about it, bery attractive, the idea of generating messages that you can send to your friends and loved ones seems sort of cheesy. Plus, it has far too many pop-ups.

Finally, I chose ENGLISH CLUB (http://www.englishclub.com/notHere.htm)
from the ESL list. This is one of the most complete and well organized pages on ESL (believe me, as a teacher, I have been to many!). It has separate sections for learners and teachers and you can become a member (that is the burocratic part I don't like!). Anyway, it pays to become a member, because the page has all kinds of resources: it offers lesson plans for all levels (elementary, intermediate, etc...) with worksheets; authentic reading; games and activities; a pen-pal project and other links to articles for teacher's constant development and update.

The page I suggest is SPARKNOTES at http://www.sparknotes.com. I use it very often to find information about the literary pieces I have to read. It provides analysis of plot and characters, themes, summaries, and other things you might find interesting to know. Of course, we should never plagiarize but this page provides us with more content to understand or to write our papers (remember to cite the page, at all times). Hardly ever did I not find what I was looking for. The page also helps with other areas other than Literature, namely, Philosophy, Math, Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science, History, Physics, Psychology, Health & Nutrition, Biography, Biology, Astronomy, etc... This works as a study guide, which, like the word says, guides your study and helps with clarify your ideas. It was once a booklet students had in the U.S. and like a number of other things became an interesting page on the net. You should visit it sometime. I hope you like it!
