HA HA HA. I noticed the same thing, but I didn't need the DVD to prove it was just more Bebe Buellshit. It was so obvious the sweet, gentle, and likeable Penny Lane was NOTHING like Bebe.

On the DVD, not only does Cameron Crowe make it crystal-clear that the character of Penny Lane was almost totally based on his dear "real-life" friend whose name was really Penny, but he emphasizes that one of the most admirable thing about the real Penny is that she's NEVER tried to capitalize on any of her relationships, which COMPLETELY rules out Bebe Buell, who has been sponging off rock stars and musicians since the seventies, one after another, until she wrote her "book" so she could profit from ALL the guys at once.

Later on in the DVD, when Cameron Crowe is talking about the ideas for the looks of Penny and the other groupies, he mentions a few other groupies along with Bebe, as you say, but notice that the way he phrases it is that they were always hanging on the arm of someone he actually WANTED to interview. I guess Bebe wasn't as "fascinating" to everyone as she repeatedly claims.

I read another article with Cameron Crowe where eventually Bebe's name comes up and he said he remembers meeting her when he was very young, and him and his friends thought she was really beautiful, then Bebe kept bugging them until they were saying to each other "Why does that girl keep hassling us to meet Jimmy Page?? Is that how beautiful women actually BEHAVE??? "

But maybe you're right. HA HA. Maybe it's a worlwide conspiracy, just like Bebe says, to cover up that Bebe really was a "muse" and not a groupie at all, because she is oh-sooo important and sooo much better than anyone on this board, so all of Cameron Crowe's "nonsense" about Penny Lane's character being based on his real-life friend "Penny" is all just "planted", and all the bad reviews about her book are "planted" too. Come to think of it, I guess everyone on this board is "planted" here too, maybe by the same forces that "plant" those secret coded messages in Elvis Costello's songs that Bebe says Elvis puts in there for the sole purpose of making her look crazy.

>Oh, my, I guess it's a world-wide conspiracy against
>poor Bebe, isn't it?
>Meanwhile, more Bebe stories get blown out of the
>water...remember back when "Almost Famous" came out,
>and Bebe told everyone that Penny Lane was based on
>her? This got repeated in more than one review of the
>film, and Cameron Crowe's comment that Penny was based
>on a real person didn't help. Anyone seeing the movie
>had to question that - there was NO WAY that the Penny
>Lane character could be based on Bebe! Well, now that
>the DVD is out, with Cameron's commentary, the full
>story emerges. Several times during the commentary, he

>Penny - "the real Penny Lane", according to Cameron.
>He makes it clear that most of her characteristics -
>her sweetness, her support of and love for the music,
>her loyalty to the bands as well as her friends, and
>her tendency to nurture everyone around her - came
>directly from the real Penny. Well, come on, now -
>does ANY of that sound like Bebe?!? He does toss
>Bebe's name out, however, when talking about the
>inspiration for Penny and the other girls' look - he
>mentions "those larger-than-life women around at that
>time, like Bebe Buell, always hanging on the arm of
>some star". Gee, what a tribute... oh, wait, I get it
>- Jason Lee's character in the film is named Jeff
>Beebe - so HE must be based on her, right? :)
