A while back, we discussed a case where a 17 year old had a sexual relationship with an adult. While the girl was technically a minor, I argued that it should not be considered molestation because 17 is old enough to make moral decisions and take responsibility for one's actions.
As I recall, ST defended the molestation of an underage minor by a legal adult not too long ago.
Hmm. "Sick and wrong." "Morally reprehensible." Doesn't hardly seem that I was "defending" it at all, does it?
The Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal reports that "A New York City police officer has married the former Corvallis High School student he is accused of sexually abusing." Matthew De Gennaro, 32, was charged with sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl about a year ago.
This case raises questions about the age of consent. De Gennaro is charged with "using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct and encouraging child sexual abuse." While De Gennaro's actions were sick and wrong, I am not sure they qualify as "abuse" as the acts were consensual. Did he take advantage of her? Possibly, but she is of an age where she knows the difference between right and wrong and was close to being a legal adult. Does one year really make that much of a difference? While De Gennaro's actions were morally reprehensible, I'm not convinced that this case merits criminal prosecution, nor do I think a 17-year-old should be classified as a "child". Had she been 15, the case for criminal charges would have been stronger.
Well, it's about time, Queer. Yes, I did condemn the adult for his immoral behavior.
You did indeed invoke your "moral" outrage against it, but poo-pooed the legality of it.
