Subject: Who is really listening?

I have been a forunate person all of my life and I feel that I still am. I have my health, strength, a job and an apartment of my own. I have been divorced for about seven years and recently me and my two children ages 11 and 12 relocated to Atlanta, Ga. to flee a domestic violence situation. The first attempt to flee to Atlanta from Texas was not successful. We arrived hoping to be able to live in a shelter until I found a job and a place of our own. I contacted over twenty shelters in the area and was turned away because they were full or because I had an adolecent son. Anyway, I went back to Texas a week later and things in my situation did not change. It was either leave or die. I picked Atlanta because it seemed to have alot of jobs so I left for Atlanta again about one month later. This time I tried shelters before I arrived and still no luck. Full from Katrina evacuees or my adolescent son could not be taken in...So I contacted a long lost relative and asked for shelter. Thank God! Within ten days of me being here I got a job paying ten dollars an hour and before two months was up I had an apartment which the rent is 780.00. I have been in Atlanta now for two and a half months.
My dilema is that I have moved to Atlanta with nothing but a few clothes. In my apartment is no furniture. I am only disappointed because I have sought assistance but each time I am turned away because of my income(too much for food stamps) eventhough all of the money that I make goes toward paying my 780.00 rent, electric and phone. Agencies can not help with furniture because most of them require that you have come out of a shelther or you must prove that you have come out of a domestic violence situation.
I ask is anyone listening because, all my life I have never been dependent on public assistance. I have always donated through payroll deduction to the United Way yet they could not even refer me to assistance. I look at my children and I know and do not regret that I got them out of that terrible situation but I feel sorry for them now because we are not poor enough to eat well and not rich enough to afford anything extra. I have searched the websites for charities that offer furniture assistance etc but we don't fall into any categories because we are not terminally ill, handicapped, unemployed or in a shelter.
My son and daughter are model students and great children. I am have NEVER done this before but yes, I would like someone to help me or refer me to an agency that assists the working poor. We need (well not anything for me) but my children need beds and clothes and maybe something to make Christmas feel like Christmas to children. Thank you and I will make sure to keep the act of kindness moving when I am more able to help. Liz
