Subject: Pierpont Spirit Finally Crushed? Or Can Something Be Done?

I've visited the UMass campus a few times the past year and I always visit Pierpont. A few years ago it became a frosh-only dorm. What better way to insure any older Pierponter would be split up and any lingering traditions could never take root again. But it's worst than that. The entire dorm has been renovated. Yes, it's about time the state put some money into the campus but the process has eradicated all the old dorm art from the 60's. Once when the Physical Plant would paint the halls over the summer we were told to paper over any hall art we wanted to keep. Since many of us were coming back the next semester we took ownership for the dorm history and tried to protect that art we passed by every day. I remember back in spring 76 that word came down and I was one of the last people on Second Sunset. A lot of the art... ancient Egyptian... looked like it had survived a previous painting. I protected what I could but lots of it was in very small blocks... like a foot square. So I took pictures that I hope to scan someday.

But once Pierpont went frosh-only... it lost all its guardians. Now, since no one will be staying there passed their freshman year, no one probably cares what was there or what will be passed on.

The old Pierpont spirit may have been crushed on campus but it still lives on in us all.

So given the obstacles… what can we do to insure that spirit takes spark again on campus?
