Day care owner charged with molesting child
By CAROLYNN BRIGHT - IR Staff Writer - 08/31/04
The Monday arrest of a Helena man on a charge of sexual assault has resulted in the closure of a local day care center.
Officials with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services said the owner of the Kid Time day care center voluntarily relinquished her day care license after prosecutors filed court documents alleging that Scott Alan Henry molested one of the children at the facility.
Henry and his wife, Jill, operated the day care center out of their home at 2220 Villard and were licensed to provide services for up to 12 children. They were first licensed in November 2000.
At the time of the center's closure, 11 children were enrolled at Kid Time, according to Gayle Shirley, public information officer for DPHHS.
According to court documents, Helena police launched an investigation into Henry, 37, earlier this month after one of the children enrolled at the center reported to her mother and therapist that Henry had touched her in a sexual manner on a number of occasions.
Examinations conducted by doctors in Helena and Great Falls identified physical evidence that investigators believe corroborated the child's report, court documents indicate.
Prosecutors declined to release the age of the victim in the case because they believe it would violate the child's right to privacy.
Officials said Henry had regular access to the girl between the spring of 2002 and the time the child revealed the alleged molestation in early August.
As of Monday, investigators had identified only the one victim, but Helena Police Chief Troy McGee said detectives were continuing to interview children enrolled at the day care and their parents.
Justice of the Peace Wally Jewell set bond for Henry at $150,000.
If convicted of the charge against him, Henry faces a maximum of life in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.
