Subject: Some troubling thoughts

I just discovered "Lost and Delirious," and I love it. It's a beautiful and moving movie. But a couple of things bother me about it.

First, the ending romanticizes a teenage suicide. That makes me queasy because I worry that it will encourage real teenagers to kill themselves as they go through their painful dramas. (The same is true of "Romeo and Juliet," of course, but that doesn't change my mind.)

Second, I think the movie reveals that we have developed a double standard. Imagine that Paulie was a Native American boy and that Tori broke up with him because her family was racist. Even then, I don't think many people would be as sympathetic to the things Paulie does as we are to the female Paulie. I think that's because we have all too much experience with the effects of male obsession and stalking, which so often turn to domestic or sexual violence.
