One of the many things I really like about "Lost and Delirious" is Mary's voiceover as she watches Tori and Jake making love against the tree. The wooden doll metaphor and her description of the blood starting to flow "down there" are a beautiful description of a shy girl's sexual awakening.
This voiceover also plays an important part in the development of the characters and the story because it makes clear that Mary is straight. She has observed lots of activity between Tori and Paulie without feeling any such stirrings. As a result, we know that Mary is just Paulie's friend -- that she isn't spending time with her in the hope of replacing Tori as her lover. I believe the filmmakers wanted to make this clear, in part, because intimate, non-sexual friendships are such an important part of how women bond with one another.
