Paulie feels that Tori is the only source of love in her life (except for the hope that her "blood mother" will love her). Consequently, Paulie relies totally on Tori to meet all of her emotional needs, including those that could be satisfied by a mother.
When Tori rejects her, she completely unravels because she feels completely alone. She values no one else in her life. She sees her “fake mother” as a corpse (“she smiles without her eyes and her hands are cold”); after the split, she doesn’t attempt to re-establish any other friendships; and she doesn’t even treat Mouse decently. In fact, she becomes a real danger to Mouse. The letter about her “real mother” gives her a brief flash of hope. Then she continues her fall into darkness.
