Subject: What's the point of the duel?

I would love to hear anyone’s ideas about this.
What purpose does the duel serve in the story? Everyone sees Tori’s rejection of Paulie at the dance as final. Even Paulie can’t believe that if she wins the duel Tori will take her back. And Paulie does win the duel. Her response to the victory, though, is hardly that of someone optimistic about her future prospects with Queen Victoria. So, the duel must serve some other purpose for Paulie. So what is that purpose, and, also, why does Mary go along with her? Thanks.
