Subject: What's in a Name?

Well... seeing as I could not sleep:

What do you believe is the significance of their names? I'll just concentrate on the three main girls. This is not a complete analysis of their names. Just a teaser I guess. I tease you.

WARNING: LONG MESSAGE

------------------

Pauline "Paulie" Oster

PAULINE is the French feminine form of PAULINUS (or PAULINO). "Saint Paulinus of Nola was a nobleman from Gaul who gave up his wealth after his son died. He became bishop of Nola and was also noted for his poetry." Hmmm. Some sources say the name PAULINE comes from PAUL which means "small," "little one," or "humble" in Latin and little/small bibically.

By the way, every time I went to search for PAULINE... it just immediately directed me to PAUL. PAULINE means nothing. It only means something in the masculine form.

PAULIE was not acknowledged anywhere. I kind of thought PAULIE was a horrible nickname to begin with. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard it was "Paulie want a cracker." From then on, I saw the nickname as a joke... a joke on Paulie Oster I guess. Somehow the dopey nickname Paulie gets and the "victorious" nickname Tori gets seem very... messed up. Is this done purposely? I don't know if I know. I don't know if I don't know.

Oster: "Oster is a Swedish name for 'one from the East.' Oster with an umlaut over the -O- is the German word for Easter." "Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): nickname from Polish ostry or Russian ostryj ‘sharp’, ‘sharp-minded’." "Dutch: from a Germanic personal name composed of aust ‘east’ + heri, hari ‘army’."

------------------

Victoria "Tori" Moller

VICTORIA is translated to have meant "winner" or "conqueror." Could this maybe be... the wrong name for the L&D character? VICTORIA means "victory" in Latin, and is "the Roman goddness of victory." "This name was borne by a long-reigning queen of England. A Canadian city bears this name in her honour." Was Victoria Moller named after the Canadian city because of the film's Canadian background?

It might be important to note that TORI/TORY is used for males and females. Maybe this nickname is ambivelant (like Tori Moller) in and of itself. Maybe I'm reaching for a meaning that isn't there. VICKI and VICKY are also suitable nicknames for Victoria, but are only considered feminine. Another thing is that Tori, in Japanese, means bird. Hmmmm.

Moller: "A Low German form of MÜLLER, meaning miller, from the Middle High German 'müln¿re' or 'müller. Dutch, North German (also Möller), and Danish (M¸ller): occupational name for a miller.'"

------------------

Mary "Mouse" "Mary B(rave)" Bradford

According to what I've been reading, almost all of them agree that MARY means bitterness. The biblical MARY is the virgin mother of Jesus [if you don't mind I'll ignore this interpretation]. MARY has also taken on the meaning of "rebelliousness." Three sources agreed that MARY meant "wished for child" or "the perfect one." One believed that the origin of the name MARY was most likely Egyptian, which means that perhaps MARY was "derived in part from MRY 'beloved' or MR 'love'." Something interesting I found was that someone interpreted the name as meaning "Star of the Sea."

Mary's nickname is sort of obvious. I understand many reason why she goes by Mouse, and Mary B(rave). I got the irony at some parts, and so we can sort of... set this one aside. I'm more interested in the other nicknames now.

Bradford: "English: habitational name from any of the many places, large and small, called Bradford; in particular the city in West Yorkshire, which originally rose to prosperity as a wool town. There are others in Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Greater Manchester, Norfolk, Somerset, and elsewhere. They are all named with Old English brâd ‘broad’ + ford ‘ford’." Blah blah blahhhh.

------------------

I found a funny website that actually give a horoscope-ish type response when you typed in a name. Check out the results when I typed in the 3 girls names:

PAULINE

Small: Latin

Creative, versatile and imaginative you appreciate beauty in all forms. You have great inner strength and courage and have the ability to accept large responsibilities or challenging situations with patience and humility. Others admire these qualities and follow your lead. You are honest, discerning and self-disciplined and need to have a peaceful environment. Putting others before self your talents are used to make life better for everyone.

(Paulie did not work)

VICTORIA

Victory : Latin

Gentle, affectionate and tolerant you are nonetheless determined and ambitious with the ability to lead. Sympathetic and understanding you are a humanitarian who wishes to improve the lives of others less fortunate. You have a keen intellect, strong intuition and creative ideas which are always put to practical purpose. You are loved by others for your inspiring optimism and for being a genuine friend.

TORI

You are a visionary with courage and enthusiasm if a little hasty at times. Your ambitious nature can be satisfied when you apply wisdom, patience and self-discipline to your vitality and zest. You have wonderful way with words and may be drawn to the communications arena where there is the potential for great success. Your generous and warm nature attracts many friends and loved ones.

MARY

Bitter: Hebrew

You are charming, talented and have a very positive attitude to life so it is hardly surprising that you attract success and recognition. Focussed and patient you understand that material rewards are a result of discipline. Being so creative and with a need for self-expression you may be drawn towards the arts, travel is also likely to be important. A loyal friend, you are a person who must be allowed freedom and independence.

MOUSE

You have leadership ability and with your power of expression can be an influential speaker. Organisation or management would suit you. Your energy, intellect and creativity overcome any challenging situations and assure your future success. Certainly with your emotions under control there is nothing which you cannot achieve. Your faith and vitality means that love and prosperity are naturally attracted to you.

------------------

Phew. I hope someone got something from all that mess.

(By the way, if the webmasters are reading this: You've made an error on your "Main Characters" section. You have Mary's name as both being Bradford and Bedford. You might also want to include that the Gardener's name is Joe in that section.)
