I see little connection with a potential link between Paulie's mother and Astrid's for various reasons
Astrid grew up with her mother--her mother was the center of her world even when she is no longer physically present. She could not be herself because her mother was insanely dominant over every aspect of Astrid's life. She would let her mother tell her how to feel or say things she thinks her mother would approve of. She finds comfort in the inconsistency of her life with Ingrid.
Ingrid was not a complacent character. Her presence took over everyone and everything. I read the book before I ever saw the movie, so I'm talking from a strict perspective from the novel. The movie paled in comparison to the beauty of the book.
Paulie's mother seems to have little to no contact with her, whereas even when Ingrid was in jail, she was in constant contact with Astrid through letters and occasional visits. There was little that Ingrid didn't know of or have some idea in Astrid's life. Paulie's mother seemed incredibly clueless on the real inner workings of her adoptive daughter's mind.
Paulie is completely her own person. I could never imagine her conform to anything, yet that is all Astrid does. She blends in as to not be a bother, whereas Paulie is always a stand-out person. Walk in a room and you'd notice Paulie right off the bat--all Astrid wants to do it be under the radar.

I am not even considering Paulie's real mother in this equation because every daughter will always want to know her mother. It is nothing special or unique for a daughter to want to know about or see her mother.

I can see a connection with Claire/Ron and Paulie/Tori, minus the physical aspect and with Astrid being Mary. Claire is always trying to win her husband's affections. She can't live without her husband Ron, so what does she do? Kill herself. Paulie can't live without Tori, so what does she do? Kill herself. Astrid watches all of this while it is happening.
