welcome to our forum here and be sure you can leave at least your nickname without any risk, as it's a bit more personal than staying invisible, okay? ;)

if you ever should read the book L&D is based on (the wifes of bath", then you'll know, there the story is a bit different, almost in some aspects as you did descibe them.

but i think, L&D is exactly made the way it is, to think things over and ask yourself those questions you mentioned. because if L&D would have had a happy ending, i guess we all would not be as impressed as we are the way it is.

just my thoughts ;)
