While we're supposed to see everything through the eyes of Mary, there is that library scene where Mouse isn't present. I don't understand how we [the audience] can see Paulie and Tori since Mouse isn't even there.
I think this movie can have lots of interpretations that are different from what it's said to be.
To me, the raptor is freedom. Paulie became very involved in falconry, even more so after she and Tori broke up. Paulie found comfort in healing the raptor because she was wounded as well. She envied that the bird could fly away and she was stuck there. The more desperate Paulie became to win back Tori, the more she took on bird-like qualities.
In the library scene where she stood on the table, for example. Ms. Bennet tried to help Paulie down from the table, and Paulie kind of flinched [we heard rustling of bird feathers] and said "never touch a raptor." We also see Paulie running and making several bird noises throughout the movie.
At the end, when Paulie jumped [because of love], she became the raptor. She was up there and looking down on everyone forever [like in her "Liar! liar! liar!" speech].
The interesting thing about Mouse is that she grew while Paulie was crumpling. She was no longer "Mouse" but Mary B...B for brave. She fed a mouse to the raptor that night she declared her hate for her father. Mouse shed her old self of being shy and quiet [like a mouse].
More than anything, Mary B was afraid of forgetting her mother's face. Her mother, even though never actually being a person in the movie, was very important to her. Unlike Tori and Paulie, Mary has a loving relationship with her mother, and she held onto that more than anything [whereas Paulie only held onto Tori, and lost her, and then her mother once again rejected her]. I think Mary dreams of Paulie every night because that is her way of never forgetting Paulie's face.
