Do you know why so many of the fires they put out are so small.....because they get there in minutes. I remember learning in my chemistry class that fire doubles in size every 30 seconds. If it was your house or loved one every SECOND counts. I would not want to wait 8-10 minutes for volunteers to show up. I am not arguing that their is a time and a place for volunteer fire departments but a urban setting is not going to work for volunteers.

I am not sure how many false alarms they respond to, do you??? I know the reason they have the pull boxes is because so many city residents can not afford to have a phone. They know that if they go to teh street corner help will be there in minutes. Once again if my house is burning I now I can run two house to the street box and get help immediately.

Unfortuntely during the past few years I have had to use the fire departments services. Though they are truly undermanned already, compared to some other cities, they were able to get the job done.

I am sick and tired of people talking about the police and fire dept salaries. I know at my job I am not expected or willing to give up my life for a complete stranger. These guys and gals do it everyday. Over two hundred cops and 100 firefighters are killed in the line of duty every year. I think their salary goes along with the risk. Everyone is talking shit about these guys today but when you need them tomorrow you will be prasing'em.
