Current Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde' thoughts on the posh Mohonk resort getaway and former Councilwoman Christine Bello's commentary:

Newburgh councilwoman wishes she had voted against Mohonk venue for conference

April 18, 2024

NEWBURGH – On the eve of the $37,000 Mohonk Mountain House weekend visioning conference approved unanimously by the all-Democratic Newburgh City Council, at least one member says she has rethought the expensive location.

Ramona Monteverde is having second thoughts about the $900-per-night single-occupancy rooms and additional charges for meals.

“If it were brought up again, I definitely would have stepped up and insist that we look at another location that wasn’t as expensive,” she said.

Monteverde said while the visioning conference is vital, the weekend could have been held at a hotel in Orange County where officials could have slept at home and driven to the conference each day.

Former Councilwoman Bello's response on Facebook:

"Easy to say they would have done things differently after the damage is done. The fact is there was hardly any public input on this resolution because the decisions were made behind closed doors, which is contrary to Open Meetings Law. There was no request for bids to even try to get a better price for the taxpayers, and on top of that, the down payment to Mohonk Resort was due and payable before it was even brought to the floor. You can be certain that this was a done deal whether the taxpayers objected or not! This is the end result of one-party rule; group think."
