Author: Corruption No More!
Subject: Why is there not more outrage over this...

Why isn’t there more outrage over this? For years, community members have heard whispers and rumors about corruption in Newburgh but have felt powerless to do anything beyond swapping stories and hoping someone in authority would step up. Now, there’s actual proof: a Newburgh city clerk was arrested on four felony charges, sparking calls for a forensic audit of the city’s Code Compliance Office to uncover how deep the misconduct goes. And yet—our elected leaders are silent, media coverage is scarce, and the public response has been eerily muted.

This isn’t just about one arrest. It’s about oversight, accountability, and whether a culture of negligence or corruption has been allowed to fester unchecked. The lack of urgency from officials should alarm anyone who cares about honest, transparent government.

If our Mayor and City Manager won’t act, then we must. You can file a formal (and anonymous, if you choose) complaint with the New York State Comptroller’s Office and demand a full investigation. This is our city. If leadership won’t protect it, we will. Submit a request here.

Forensic audit sought after city clerk’s arrest

Jennifer Bravo Sanchez, a Newburgh clerk in the city’s code compliance office, was arrested last month on four counts of felony falsification of business records, one count of grand larceny and several counts of performing illegal functions as a public servant. She pleaded not guilty to all charges. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m.

Newburgh resident Tamie Hollins spoke about the arrest, alleging that Bravo Sanchez charged money for technical drawings that clerks at the code compliance office were supposed to provide for free. Hollins said Sanchez was caught allegedly because she raised her prices for the drawings, which led to contractors complaining and brought the issue to wider attention.

At a City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 8, Hollins used the example of Bravo Sanchez to call for forensic audits, saying, “We need to keep the money that’s coming in! So what I’m asking, what the community is asking, cause I’ve talked to several people, we’re asking for a forensic audit for all of the cash taking departments.”

Hollins explained the need for an audit by alleging that Bravo Sanchez was not the only city employee committing crimes, saying “she’s not the only one, there’s been several employees that’s been stealing in the city of Newburgh recently.” No charges have been filed against other city employees.

Mayor Torrance Harvey rejected the idea of conducting an audit despite support from council members, saying, “A forensic audit...has to be specific to a department, and one person called for it, not the entire public...What was being referenced is already an ongoing investigation, it’s a criminal investigation, someone was arrested, and just like anyone else in America they have due process under the law, and that process has commenced forward.”

Bravo Sanchez was charged with four counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, one count of felony grand larceny and four counts of performing illegal functions as a public servant. She was arraigned and appeared before City Court Judge Anika Mohammed on Sept. 12. She is due back in City Court on Oct. 8.
