Back in the last recession, '08ish, the necsd invited the public to a forum brainstorming cost cutting measures (we've been here before). We were divided into at least a dozen tables of a dozen or so individuals comprised of three necsd members and the balance being the public. The results from each table were verbally presented to the entire forum at the end of the b.s. sessions. Prior to attending I looked into the then current and a few years' prior budgets as well as related public edu reports. The trends related to the increasing and compounding costs such as insurance, pensions etc. was, to me, glaringly unsustainable and growing disproportionate relative to actual edu and bldg. costs. I knew the the reaction I would receive in presenting such "revelations", I went with it anyway. I was not disapponted. Initially, the issues I brought were met with "deer in the headlights" looks. Needless to say, they were not part of the suggestions from my table as presented. In fact, an overall forum discussion related to discontinuing of fertilizer on the grounds garnered much enthusiasm. That was my last public attempt at ..."show us where the money can be cut to save these jobs". Again, public service cost issues are not exclusive to Newburgh. They've been decades in the making and "covid" has become the convenient go-to scapegoat. The "System" takes no quarter...hedge accordingly if not done so already. Related...
