Councilwomen Mejia and Monteverde were absent from Monday night’s City Council meeting. During opening comments from the Council, Councilman Shakur remarked that he had recently been arrested, but then wisely stated that he would not comment further until his day in court. Councilman Sklarz admonished Mr. Shakur for his reported behavior during that arrest, and suggested that the Council consider censuring him again. Councilwoman Sofokles said that she agreed with Councilman Sklarz’s comments.

During the closing comments from the council, Councilman Shakur launched a personal attack on Mr. Sklarz, inexplicably implying that he had not been elected to the Council, even though they were running mates on the Democratic ticket in November 2019. He then ended by threatening Councilman Sklarz with “you better watch yourself”.

Neither Mayor Harvey nor Councilman Grice addressed Councilman Shakur’s reported behavior during his arrest. Their silence could be for one of three reasons: They 1. Condone Councilman Shaku’s r aberrant behavior, 2. Will address it after Mr. Shakur’s case is adjudicated, or 3, lack the political courage to address the issue. Only 2. would be acceptable of course.

Councilman Grice is a smart, hardworking City Council member, who might make a good County Clerk if he is elected to that office. He must show that he has leadership ability to handle that higher post though. He can start by stepping up to the plate to address Councilman Shakur’s behaviors. To not do so would show both him and Mayor Harvey in a bad light. Councilwomen Mejia and Monteverde must also weigh in on the issue.
