Does it really matter how much damage is done to Downing Park? Is this an honorable precedent for an historic park? Hold a huge, destructive fundraiser for a private org. and let the park get messed up and then fix it up by volunteers ...for what...for next time around? The park becomes a big money-making venue and ultimately cancels out Olmsted's intention, which was to offer a space within the city for people to enjoy nature and escape the madding energy of the general city atmosphere. Now we have folks who want to turn Downing Park into a Rec. Park. We have that, across town. Downing Park stands as a unique space, created by an artist. Obviously the DPPC can't fathom this great treasure.
