A bit more on the Mayor's aversion to debate

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u6VKP-cockKqB60qHEOggBtmHu0KyzoU5U5f3xRum7w/edit

September 2019 -- Newburgh, NY: In a now deleted Facebook post, Mayor Torrance Harvey commented he will not debate his independent challenger Ali T. Muhammad because he “only debates his equals”. The post, which has since been deleted from the Mayor’s page, was a live video featuring the Mayor. In the comments section, one of Muhammad’s social media accounts posted the comment “Let’s get this debate going.” Torrance Harvey replied:

“You gotta go to college and get THAT debate going.. I only debate my equals!!! I’d eat you alive in a debate Brah! Put your work in Sociology 101 first.. Our city needs an educated leader who also knows the people! 29 years here.. you don’t live here. I’ve been by the crib to visit you all summer!!!”

In a Facebook comment posted on Saturday, Mayor Harvey attempted to shame and belittle Muhammad for not having a college education, stating that anyone who doesn’t have a college degree isn’t on his level. Muhammad currently rents an apartment in Newburgh and has established residency. Mayor Harvey also suggested that Muhammad take a sociology class, which is the study of social relationships, interactions, and culture. The Ali T. Muhammad campaign suggests that Mayor Harvey examine the relationships he has with the citizens of Newburgh, whether they have a college degree or not. Nearly 90% of Newburgh's population over 25 does not have a college degree (2017 American Community Survey), and college affordability is a major issue. The last thing we need in the City of Newburgh is a Mayor who wants to belittle his constituents instead of lead and inspire.

A healthy part of our democracy is debate, and having a Mayor who refuses to debate a candidate based on his education is doing a disservice to their community. We condemn Mayor Harvey’s offensive comments, which further prove a massive disconnect between our city leadership and the people of Newburgh. As a community leader, we don't belittle those for having less than us, but teach them to strive for a better life.
