About "all that money was not well spent" ... U.S. government expenditures, eg "Welfare" enlarge, is what funds 38% of GDP. So far, for the current fiscal year Interest Expense on U.S. debt of $32.3 trillion is a record $652 billion. If the fed res keeps interest rates "higher for longer", interest payments on total US debt would potentially be the single biggest US government expenditure and surpassing social security. Remove the "Welfare" and it ALL comes crashing down. High relative Real inflation, more deficit spending, is a given at this point. It's all about the "flow" and positioning. There is nothing puzzling about it. Municipalities such as the city of newburgh take positions on the margins of the general diminishing return on investment. People live, position themselves, where they do because it is, one way or the other, "affordable" to them relative to the price of crime.
