Subject: EXCLUSIVE: Mayor Refuses to Resign!

In light of being the Chair of the IDA for the previous six years, under which mismanagement has led to the city spending money from a grant it did not pursue to the tune of $1.7million, I asked the Mayor last night if he was planning on resigning. He steadfastly refused saying we're still getting the grant.

The city spent $1.7million on the West Street Project before it had the cash in hand, before it did the proper paperwork, in spite of many frustrating pleas from the the federal government agency overseeing it. That agency last week sent notice to the City Council and the city that the project needed to be closed out.

$1.7million translates into a tax increase- or services cut- to the tune of 17%. This is in addition to the loss of other money and incompetent management of our budget under City Manager Jean Ann McGrane. It's in addition to the cost overruns at the courthouse.

I don't understand how a person with so much responsibility connected to the bungled grant application, as both Chair of the IDA and Mayor, would have the nerve to sit in front of his constituents and claim that he's working in the best interests of the city and its taxpayers. If he doesn't realize the seriousness of this issue, it's up to others to make it clear that he is not worthy of that position.

He claimed last night that we were getting that grant even though the government agency in its recent correspondence made it quite clear that the project was to be closed out and that the matter is over. In his frustration with my question, that the press refused to ask of him, he also said we would be getting the waterfront money. That's what happens when a property sells, the liens are paid out. But even that's not clear and does not explain away the incompetence and foot-dragging in collecting that money. Why would we have to fight for money owed us? How much has it cost so far in legal fees?
