STEWART AIRPORT – The state’s decision to shut down the Mid-Hudson State Police Crime lab at Stewart Airport will mean local police departments will now have to travel long distances with evidence to be reviewed.

The majority of the evidence processed at the Stewart facility is for municipal police agencies said State Police Lt. Steve Jimpetti, director of the lab. That means expenses for local agencies will increase with additional vehicle wear and tear, fuel costs and manpower to transport the evidence. It will also take longer for the agencies to receive it back, he said.

The additional costs will impact local budgets as departments had not planned for the additional expense.
