I've heard the explanation for the 1%=$100,000 tax increase. I don't doubt that at a certain level that probably holds true. But I think you're making a mathematical error in translating a $1.75 loss to a $17% raise. To take this reasoning in extreme, if we spend $10,000,000 extra, does that mean a 100% rise in taxes?

Personally, I would not quote this figure. It does not make sense to me.
