District Attorney Hoovler exposed the idiocy of the City of Newburgh’s press release. If Mr. Venning’s press release was the work of the city’s newly hired public relations firm, the out-of-town outfit is off to a very poor start in the city. They have made City Manager Venning and Commissioner Gomerez look very foolish.

If the city had good crime statistics to release to the public, why not leave it at that? Their attack on the chief prosecutor of Orange County and on the channel 12 news “presenter” detracted from what the city views as good news. The City of Newburgh does not need to create enemies. Both District Attorney Hoovler and Blaise Gomez, the channel 12 news “presenter”, are well respected public figures, each of whom is far more popular than either City Manager Venning or Police Commissioner Gomerez.

What these dueling press releases have exposed is City Manager Venning’s inability and unwillingness to engage with the media. If he made himself accessible to the media he wouldn’t find himself in this predicament. He is in dire need of a continuing education course on how to deal with the media. The City Council needs to hold him responsible.
