This article points out the aberrant behavior of a few council members, notably Mayor Harvey and Councilman Shakur. Councilman Grice was shown as being triggered by the public negotiating stance of some of the Newburgh Illuminated supporters. Note to the mayor: Before showing disdain for out of towners, please ask yourself how many of the city’s tax paying businesses would be able to exist without out of towners patronizing them? I will give the mayor credit for being relatively restrained in his comments at this week’s council meeting though. Note to Councilman Shakur: Please elaborate on your comments about the last administration apparently giving Liberty Street to out of towners. Liberty Street businesses started in decline in the 1960s. There has been an opportunity since that time for anyone living within the city or from out of town to invest their time and money in developing and operating businesses on the street. Many Newburghers were amongst the first to do so. Regina Angelo and Sue Young come immediately to mind. The city has been very fortunate to have folks from out of town to come in and invest their time and money developing and operating businesses on the street. Your comments went on to say “we are still trying to get our businesses back”. What does that mean? There are still plenty of opportunities for City of Newburgh entrepreneurs to open businesses. Please encourage anyone who is capable of doing so to take advantage of the opportunity. One final note in regard to comments made by the young barber who operates his shop on Liberty Street. There is no question that the parking kiosks have been detrimental to some businesses. I understand the city’s need for revenue, but they dropped the ball from the outset on this by not choosing the option to have the kiosks accept coins.
