So obviously volunteer and paid departments both have their downsides. Am I sensing a reasonable discussion here? What are the incentives to work for a fire department vs to volunteer for one? If they don't weigh out, why would one work as a volunteer alongside paid firefighters doing the same thing? All these complaints about our paid department and rumblings about having a hard time finding volunteers in others are moot without taking the bigger picture into consideration. With mutual aid the effectiveness of the system as a whole needs to be hashed out between all the affected communities.
