While I have to agree with your frustration about petitioning. It does create a baseline for who has support or people who are willing to assist. And From what I understand about petitions you have to collect signatures from the party you are running for and people get kicked off for not doing that. In fairness, if you can’t do that right, why should people vote for you? At that point it really comes down to who has the most money, and that’s even worse than the petition barrier. Moreover, i remember reading how one candidate had Tupac Shakur signing their petition a few years back. People who can’t meet a minimum threshold either can’t follow instructions and the ones who actually commit fraud deserve our support even less. Look what happens when just anyone runs, you get Congressman santos. It’s a messy and complicated system but it does provide a filter of sorts.
