Subject: Mayor Harvey’s Meltdown

I don’t believe the city has posted a video of last night’s City Council meeting, and with good reason. During the public comment section a speaker asked the council members to be transparent about whether or not they had supported the Deputy City Managers position, which the public had strenuously objected to. When the council commented only three of them addressed it. Councilwoman Monteverde said she did not support it. Councilman Shakur said he supported it because the Office of the City Manager was doing a great job (huh?). Mayor Harvey then began one of his senseless rants, where he spoke a couple of hundred words with no meaning, trying to say that we needed the new position because of all of the development happening around the city. He then began to address the colored burial ground.

During his discussion of the colored burial ground, he brought up the fact that Newburgh has many different opportunities for children including the Armory, the Boys and Girls Club, te rec department, etc. At this point, Councilman Shakur lost his cool (where have I seen that before). He started shouting at the Mayor, who tried to gavel him down several times. Councilman McLymore tried to be a peacemaker by going back and forth between the two to no avail. The Mayor threatened to direct the Police Chief to remove the Councilman, who replied try doing it. The exchange finally ended by Councilman Shakur telling the Mayor F U. What an embarrassment to the city. The Council should vote to censure both the Mayor and the councilman.
