Mr. Venning was an excellent comptroller who had other attributes such as the ability to run a meeting. Contrast the way Mr. Venning runs the Council workshop meetings with the way Mayor Harvey runs the City Council meetings. Unfortunately, Mr. Venning has too many flaws to be totally in charge, as he was when the Council promoted him to City Manager. The city needs to hire a professional City Manager who is transparent, a good manager of personnel, and knows how to deal with the public. That City Manager will need to hire a competent Comptroller. Hopefully, that person will be able to follow the procedures that Mr. Venning left in place in the Comptroller’s office.
