Patience my friend, the sky is not falling. The City of Newburgh functioned for well over 150 years before Mr. Venning’s coup installed him as City Manager. He will always be remembered for the work he did as the Comptroller. I will give him an A on that. He did some good work as City Manager too. I will give him a B+ on that.

Mr. Venning was well organized and ran efficient meetings. At all the City Council meetings and workshops that he attended, he was always the smartest person in the room. You mention that he schooled the council last week. I agree with you, and I am sure the council learned from him. He is now gone though, and the city will survive. Mr. Morris will take over as the Acting City Manager, and the search for a new manager will begin.

I agree with you too that Mr. Neppl will soon be gone. That is too bad. In baseball terms, he would have been a solid double as City Manager. The purpose of doing a nationwide search is to come up with a home run hitter which may or may not happen. I had hoped that Mr. Neppl would have stayed and applied for the job. He knows Newburgh well, has a good intellect and has some contacts at the state level. During the vetting process the council could determine how Mr. Neppl would differ from Mr. Venning in managing the city. Maybe he was just being a loyalist in serving Mr. Venning as Chief of Staff and Deputy City Manager. If his own management style would surpass Mr. Venning’s shortcomings, he may have been the home run hitter that the council seeks. I guess we will never find out though.
