The metered parking revenue is one offset for the Burgh's municipal cost, it doesn't pay for it self. In fact the whole entire expensed Police Traffic dept./On StreetParking Svs. isn't even a wash relative to the revenue;fees, fines and violations. The smart meters are tied into the DMV, I'm gathering if a driver has a motor vehicle violation they will be flagged. That would be revenue for the state.
fwiw, based on the 2022 adopted budget guesstimate, the city seems to be planning on upping enforecement and or the related fines substantially. Still, not an even wash. But it's needed, otherwise the peeps would be double parking on both sides of the street, which would have them driving on the sidewalks if doable. Current half a million dollars in parking violations indicate it's not an exaggeration.
My previous comment is to point out the innocuous creep of the ushering in a cashless society where a customer's body is becoming a transactional tool. The convenience aspect is the sell. As you point out, there is was no alternative offered despite there being machines capable of this. There are municipalities with smart metering systems that exempt those with disabilities and residents. Maybe its incorporated into the Burgh's system and it hasn't been communicated to the public...eyes roll.
