Subject: Council Mis-information

As usual, last night’s City Council meeting contained a lot of mis-information. During the comments from the public, there were several complaints about Central Hudson’s billing problems. During the opening comments from the Council, several members tried to address these problems. Councilwoman Monteverde stated that Central Hudson can “basically charge whatever they want” for delivery charges. This is totally erroneous, of course. Utility delivery charges are set by the NYS Public Service Commission rate-making process.

Not to be outdone, when the mayor made his comments, in his usual blustery fashion, he stated that Central Hudson had so much pressure placed on them by the state and by elected officials, that they sold the utility to a Canadian company. Note to the mayor: Central Hudson implemented its new billing system on September 1, 2021. The company had been sold to a Canadian company, Fortis, Inc. in 2013, some 8 years earlier.

Perhaps Corporation Counsel, Ms. Kelson should work on a disclaimer, to be broadcast at each meeting of the City Council. It could say something like “Statements made by council members during the course of this meeting are solely their opinions. Any relationship that these opinions have to reality may be purely coincidental.”
