Subject: Mayor Harvey

Despite being both an elected official and a teacher of history and civics, Mayor Harvey exhibits an amazing ignorance of politics, economics, and logic. During the New Business segment of Monday night’s City Council meeting, Councilwoman Martinez discussed her proposal to have the Council sign a memo supporting the State Legislature raising the state’s minimum wage law during the 2023/2024 budget negotiations.

When it came time for the mayor to speak, he went off on a diatribe about the federal minimum wage which is $7.25/ hour not having been raised since 2009. He then wrongfully asserted that the fight for minimum wage should be in Washington, not Albany. wring, wrong, wrong Mr. Mayor. The federal minimum wage will never affect the residents of Newburgh. Under the state’s minimum wage law, Orange County residents will likely have a minimum wage of $15/hour at the end of this year. It is currently $14.20/ hour.

The mayor did show some understanding of the negative effects that raising the minimum wage has on small businesses. How then does he think there is any political will at the federal level of raising the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour beyond $15/hour? What would that do to all businesses across the country that do not have state minimum wage laws above the federal minimum. The mayor shows no understanding of the vast differences in cost of living in the 50 states, making the states themselves, rather than the federal government the best place to establish minimum wages.

The mayor is a good entertainer though. He never fails to put on a good show at City Council meetings.
