If, as you indicate, Ms Mountain was “rather incompetent”, we cannot fault the City Manager for dismissing her. Mr. Venning, himself, is a well educated man who is not without savvy/cunning. He performed well as City Comptroller and then engineered the ouster of his predecessor as City Manager, negotiating a hefty raise for himself in the process.

As City Manager, he seems to be modeling the structure of the city government after the Executive Branch of the federal government. He has established the position of Chief of Staff in his office, and to date has established three Commissioner positions. Each of these moves isolates him from the media and the people.

Published reports indicate that he has gagged the city staff, not allowing anyone to speak to the media. Other reports have said that the departments that he leads are not honoring FOIA requests. Mr. Venning has now hired an out-of-town public relations firm that will spin any information that he decides to release to the public. In short, he is ruling like a despot. Has he earned the nickname “Kim Jong Venning”?
